Title

A RESOLUTION CONCERNING THE STATE OF MARYLAND SUSTAINABLE COMMUNITIES PROGRAM FOR FORT WASHINGTON for the purpose of approving Fort Washington as a Sustainable Community through the Application for submission to the Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development (“Department”) for participation in the Department’s Sustainable Communities Program.

Background

This resolution is to support the designation and boundary of the proposed Fort Washington Sustainable Community. The Sustainable Communities Program, administered by the Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development was established by the Sustainable Communities Act of 2010 (House Bill 475 Chapter number 487). The proposed Fort Washington Sustainable Community designation supports stakeholder engagement and collaboration to pursue coordinated strategies for community revitalization. The program will also provide Prince George’s County and key stakeholders in the proposed Fort Washington Sustainable Community Area access to competitive funding opportunities and incentives from several state agencies including the Maryland Department of Transportation, the Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development, and more. Designation as a sustainable community does not guarantee funding but allows eligible applicants including local government agencies and community development organizations to apply for competitive state funding programs. Approval of this resolution has no direct fiscal impact on County funds. Approval of this resolution demonstrates the County Council’s support for the proposed boundary and Sustainable Community Action Plan. The application will be submitted to the Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development for consideration.
