Title

Proposed correspondence to The Honorable Richard P. Henry, Inspector General for Education, requesting an investigation regarding certain claims in the School Construction Program for the Prince George’s County Public Schools.

Background

During the December 2022 Council's Retreat, two (2) speakers (a former Prince George's County Public Schools Supervisor of Capital Programs, and a former private sector school building and former Interagency Commission on School Construction (IAC) Senior Regional Facilities Manager) provided information suggesting possible school construction irregularities within the Prince George's County Public Schools - School Construction Program.  Subsequently, at the January 2023 Education & Workforce Development (EWD) Committee meeting, Council Members expressed a desire for an investigation to the concerns that were discussed at the Council Retreat.  The proposed correspondence to the Maryland Office of the Inspector General for Education (OIGE) is requesting an investigation to the issues outlined in the letter.  The OIGE is responsible for examining and investigating the management and affair of county education boards, local school systems, public schools, and nonpublic schools that receive state funding to determine if established policies and procedures comply with federal and state laws.  The Office may also examine and investigate the management and affairs of the Maryland State Department of Education and the Inter-agency Commission on School Construction.
