Resolution concerning Workers’ Rights for the purpose of expressing the County Council’s support for the workers at Smithfield Foods, Inc. who have of alleged several claims of unfair labor practices against the Company’s Tar Heel, North Carolina Division.
Background
Smithfield Foods, Inc. is the world’s largest pork processor and hog producer, with revenues approaching $12 billion in fiscal 2007. In additional to several processing plants in North America and overseas, Smithfield Foods, Inc. manufactures products under dozens of brand named product lines. The Smithfield Foods, Inc. processing plant located in Tar Heel, N.C. employees about 5,500 workers who have filed several actions against the Company with the National Labor Relations Board. These claims include unfair labor practices, whereas Smithfield Foods, Inc. has created an environment of intimidation, racial tension, fear and even violence. Several jurisdictions both in North Carolina and outside of the State have adopted Resolutions in support of the workers rights at the Tar Heel, N.C. processing plant for Smithfield Foods, Inc.
