Title
Proposed letter to Richard Hughes, Administrator, Maryland Heritage Areas Program, to acknowledge requirements for local approval of a proposal to revise an existing management plan for a designation heritage area. In addition, the letter provides a table of action steps with corresponding timeframes concerning the Council's consideration and approval of the expanded Anacostia Trails Heritage Area as an amendment to the local plan.
Background
On September 25, 2001, the County Council approved the Anacostia Trails Heritage Area Management Plan: A Functional Master Plan for Heritage Tourism amending the 1982 General Plan. The Plan describes the Anacostia Trails Heritage Area and the heritage resources contained therein and provides strategies for heritage tourism, interpretation, stewardship and linkages, and discusses implementation practices. The Maryland Heritage Areas Authority (MHAA) approved the Plan on October 16, 2001.
The Code of Maryland Regulations authorizes MHAA to approve revisions of management plans, including any certified heritage area boundary changes submitted jointly by the heritage area management entity and all of the local governments in which the property to be added or deleted from the heritage area is located.
Accordingly, these items reflect the incorporation of the amended Anacostia Trails Heritage Area management plan revision within the Countywide Resource Conservation Functional Master Plan for purposes of approval as an amendment to the local plan for the County, and serve as an acknowledgement to the Maryland Heritage Areas Authority with updated timeframe information regarding local approval.
