Title
A RESOLUTION CONCERNING STATE OF MARYLAND FIGHT FOR $15 for the purpose of expressing the Council's support for state legislation to increase the minimum wage to $15 an hour by 2023.
Background
The federal minimum wage is $7.25 an hour effective July 24, 2009. On November 27, 2013, the County Council enacted legislation to increase the minimum wage in Prince George's County to $11.50 by 2017. In 2014, the Maryland General Assembly passed legislation to increase the state minimum wage rate to $10.10 by 2018. Since 2012, there has been a push nationwide by workers to have states increase their minimum wage rates to $15 an hour. It is anticipated that a bill will be introduced during the 2018 General Assembly session to raise the minimum wage to $15 an hour by 2023. The proposed legislation expresses the Council's support for state legislation to increase the minimum wage to $15 an hour by 2023.
