Background Necessitating Legislation:
Establishing an artificial intelligence task force in Prince George's County is imperative for several reasons:
1. it allows the county to keep pace with rapid technological advancements in AI, ensuring it remains competitive
and future-ready. With AI investments expected to reach $1.2 trillion globally by 2025, staying ahead is crucial
for economic growth and innovation.
2. the task force addresses the pressing need to enhance the educational curriculum. Studies show that 74% of
executives believe that AI knowledge will be essential for future job seekers. By integrating AI concepts into
education, the county can equip students with the skills needed for AI-driven careers, ensuring a prepared and
competitive workforce.
3. integrating AI into county services is essential for better serving residents. With 73% of government leaders
recognizing AI as a critical enabler for improved citizen services, leveraging AI technologies can enhance
efficiency, accessibility, and effectiveness of public services, ultimately benefiting residents.
4. building public trust through transparency and community engagement is vital. Research indicates that 66% of
consumers express concerns about AI's ethical use. By fostering transparency and engaging with the community,
the task force can address these concerns, ensuring that AI initiatives align with the values and priorities of Prince
George's County residents.
In summary, the artificial intelligence task force is necessary for Prince George's County to stay competitive, prepare its
workforce, improve service delivery, and build public trust in the AI era.
The Task Force will consist of:
● Councilmember Wala Blegay, Esq.
● Chief Information Officer and Director, Office of Information Technology
● Four Local Business Owners in Technology and AI
● Representatives from Educational Institutions:
○ Prince George’s Community College
○ Bowie State College
○ University of Maryland, College Park
○ Capitol Technology University
● Representative from the Prince George’s County Chamber of Commerce
● Representative from the Employ Prince Georges
● Representative from the Prince George’s County School System
This task force will work together for twelve months and produce a final report analysis including
recommendations.
