Title

A RESOLUTION CONCERNING URGING THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT TO EXERCISE RESTRAINT TO AVOID GLOBAL NUCLEAR WAR for the purpose of The Prince George’s County Government urging the Biden Administration and encouraging the federal government to engage in nuclear disarmament to prevent global nuclear warfare and massive destruction; and generally relating to global and federal nuclear disarmament.

Background

Nuclear conflict between superpowers will cause unimaginable and irreversible catastrophic  damage to all life on this earth. This will produce conditions in which much of humanity would starve and humans might become extinct.  Due to Prince George’s County’s proximity to the District of Columbia, a nuclear war is expected to lead to the immediate destruction of significant portions of this County and much of the surrounding areas. In fiscal year 2021, Maryland taxpayers collectively paid approximately one point seven billion dollars ($1.7 billion) in federal taxes towards nuclear programs, including but not limited to, the modernization of  nuclear weapons. The Prince George's County Council asserts that a more effective use for Prince Georges’ County’s federal tax dollars would be to provide sustainable energy programs, additional education funding, more eviction and foreclosure prevention programs, an increase of health care programs for all County residents, and increased senior services. Sixty-seven municipalities including Washington, D.C., Montgomery County, and Baltimore City, as well as the California and Oregon, have passed Resolutions in support of the "Back From the Brink Campaign" and the "Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons". This Resolution will add Prince George's County's support for nuclear disarmament and restraint from using nuclear weapons.
