Title
A RESOLUTION CONCERNING EXPANDING THE BOUNDARIES OF THE ANACOSTIA TRAILS HERITAGE AREA for the purpose of approving the proposed county-wide expansion of the boundaries of the Anacostia Trails Heritage Area to include southern Prince George’s County.
Background
The State of Maryland created the Maryland Heritage Areas Program in 1996 to help communities use heritage tourism to strengthen their economies through the development, protection, and promotion of cultural, historical, and natural resources. The program is governed Maryland Heritage Areas Authority (MHAA), which sets the criteria for certifying heritage areas and approving boundary amendments. In 2001, the MHAA certified the Anacostia Trails Heritage Area (ATHA), which currently encompasses over 100 square miles of Prince George’s County. The boundaries of the heritage area were last updated in 2017; however, the current boundaries of the heritage area do not include Council Districts 7, 8 or 9.
ATHA, Inc. now seeks to amend the heritage area to include southern Prince George’s County. As part of the application to amend the boundaries, MHAA requests evidence of the local jurisdiction’s support of the proposed expansion. This resolution serves as the County’s statement of support for the proposed expansion. (Clerk's office corrected error in the name in accordance with Council rule 14.3)
