Title

AN ACT CONCERNING FLOODPLAIN ORDINANCE for the purpose of amending the County’s Floodplain Ordinance to be consistent with the State of Maryland’s Model Floodplain Management Ordinance (May 2014), which meets the requirements of the National Flood Insurance Program (the “NFIP”).

Background

This Bill is for the purpose of amending the County’s Floodplain Ordinance, found in Division 4 of Subtitle 32 (Water Resources Protection and Grading Code) of the County Code.  The amendments are consistent with provisions of the Maryland Model Floodplain Management Ordinance, approved in 2014 by the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) new Flood Insurance Rate Map (FIRM).

The County is required by the Maryland Department of the Environment to update its Floodplain Ordinance to meet the requirements of the National Flood Insurance Program (the “Program”), which is administered by FEMA.  Prince George’s County was accepted for participation in the Program in 1972.  As of that date, Prince George’s County’s FIRM requires all development and new construction to be compliant with the regulations as set forth by FEMA.
